Over the last decade, the cosmetic industry has expanded significantly, fuelled by societal trends such as self-care, physical health and relaxation. The skincare market is growing more rapidly than any other part of the industry. Many of us have more complex “self-care” routines than ever before, incorporating premium products into our skincare regimens to maintain youthful, glowing skin. As we age, effective skincare is crucial, and should not be limited to the face, neck and limbs.

According to dermatologists, our chests and breasts are more prone to signs of ageing than other areas of our bodies. Skin here is typically thin, susceptible to sun damage and very sensitive. To avoid inflammation and tenderness, skincare products must be chosen carefully, with irritants, allergens and strongly scented products avoided. To combat crease lines and sagging skin, try products with antioxidants, retinol and growth factors to stimulate elastin and collagen production.

Exfoliants can also be used, but limit use to once a week and be gentle! For dull skin, we recommend using an exfoliant which contains AHAs. AHAs are water soluble acids and aid cell regeneration. If you’re prone to acne, try incorporating a salicylic acid cleanser to combat breakouts.

Breasts susceptible to chaffing? Find a product with a combination of witch hazel, silica and vitamin B3. This combination of ingredients effectively absorbs sweat.

Try using a weather app to check ultraviolet levels before leaving home. The UV Index is measured daily, and provides a great indication of exposure risks to harmful UV rays, which can damage and age skin. Any UV reading above 0 can cause sunburn, so we recommend applying sunscreen everyday to avoid damage to skin. If the UV reading is above 3, try using sunscreen with a higher sunscreen protection factor. Remember, AHAs and retinol increase skin cell turnover rate, making skin especially sensitive. If you’re using them in your skincare routine, increase SPF regardless of UV level.

Keeping your breasts healthy

Regularly checking your breasts for lumps and redness is crucial for early detection of breast cancer. Stand in front of a mirror and straighten your shoulders. Put your hands on your hips, and look for any dimpling, rashes, redness or swelling. Keep an eye out for any distortion or swelling. Raise your arms and note any changes. Fluid leaking from the nipple may also be an indicator of unhealthy breasts. Feel your breasts while lying horizontally. We recommend keeping your fingers flat and using a circular motion. Begin at the nipple, and move in larger circles until you reach the edge of your breast. Try moving your fingers vertically to ensure thoroughness. Finally, repeat this step while sitting or standing.

If you think you have a lump, don’t panic. The majority of lumps are benign (not cancerous) rather than malignant. Lumps may be caused by hormonal changes. Call your GP or gynaecologist for advice, particularly if changes to your breast last longer than your menstrual cycle. We recommend keeping a journal, as this makes it easier to track changes.

Every year, millions of people across the world attend breast screening appointments. Breast screenings, also known as mammograms, are a great way to spot early signs of cancer. For more information, try talking to your GP. Most people receive their test result within two weeks.

Adjusting your diet can also promote healthy breasts. Antioxidant rich foods, such as cauliflower, cabbage and kale may counter toxins known to produce cancerous cells. Flax seeds, meanwhile, have more lignans than other foods. Lignans are plant compounds, and contain fibre and phytoestrogen, which is an antioxidant. Research suggests that phytoestrogen targets oestrogen receptors, preventing the formation of oestrogen-stimulated cancers. Turmeric, berries, walnuts and soy protein are also linked with cancer prevention.

Choosing the right bra

Lingerie shopping is fun, but choosing the right bra isn’t always an easy task. We recommend being patient and trying out a variety of different styles and sizes. One size might be perfect in one style, but completely wrong in another. We recommend going by feel as opposed to label. The band of your bra – which is crucial for support and comfort – should be level, and sit parallel to the floor. The centrepiece of your bra, also known as the gore, should rest flat against your sternum. This helps to anchor the bra. Underwires, meanwhile, should fully enclose the breast. Ensure that the wire isn’t uncomfortable, or sticking into the breast tissue.

Those with larger breasts may prefer seamed or cut-and-sewn bras. Made with mesh or lace, these bras are more supportive than t-shirt bras. If you’re small busted, try bras specifically designed for a more petite frame.
